Luxor Hot Air Balloon
The Nile, the ancient sites and the first light. My experience of flying over Luxor, with practical advice on choosing your departure.

My view over Luxor: balloons, ancient sites and the mountains catching the first light.
Quick answer
If seeing sunrise over the Nile is your priority, choose and explicitly confirm the first flight. The flight after sunrise is another way to enjoy the landscape. Weather and clearance can change the timing; confirm your own pickup time with the organiser.
Best for A different view of Luxor, with an early start.
What to wear Warm layers, a hat and scarf for a cold pre-dawn start.
Duration The linked listing describes about 3 hours overall, including transfers; not 3 hours in the air.

MY EGYPT NOTES · BY DMITRY SALEY
Above ancient Egypt, as the day begins.
You can fly in a hot air balloon in many places around the world. What makes Luxor special for me is the landscape below: the monuments of ancient Egyptian civilisation, the Nile and the mountains around the ancient tombs. Seeing them from the air is an experience I would not miss.

First flight or second flight?
If watching the sun rise over the Nile is your priority, I recommend looking for the first flight. Confirm that you are booking the sunrise departure, rather than assuming that every morning balloon ride takes off before sunrise. Flights depend on weather and clearance, so the exact timing and route can change.
The second flight takes place after sunrise. I think that is a wonderful experience too: the landscape is already lit, and you still have the extraordinary view of Luxor from the air. It deserves a closer look of its own. For now, the important thing is to know which departure you are choosing.
Check the option before you book
When I checked the linked Viator experience, an “After Sunrise” option was displayed. If you want to be in the air for sunrise, confirm the first-flight option and its price with the organiser.
An early start—and warm clothes
Be ready for a very early morning. For a first flight in winter, I would plan for a pickup as early as around 3:30 am. That is an example of how early the start can be, not a fixed time for this booking. The organiser confirms your own pickup time.
It can feel quite cold before dawn, so I recommend dressing warmly. A hat, scarf and layers made sense for my morning. You can see that in my own photograph below.

The spectacle begins on the ground
Watching the balloons inflate is part of the experience. In the darkness, the burners light up the enormous fabric envelopes. The colours glow, the baskets are prepared and, one by one, the balloons begin to rise. I would make time to watch this rather than thinking of it as simply waiting for takeoff.

Sunrise over the Nile
On the first flight, you have the chance to see sunrise over the Nile. The river and valley emerge from the morning haze, while orange light spreads across the mountains and the landscape of ancient tombs. For me, this is the moment that makes the very early start worthwhile.

What flying felt like to me
I found the flight remarkably calm. The closest comparison I can give is standing on a balcony while the landscape slowly moves below you. In my experience, there was none of the shaking I associate with other kinds of flying, and I did not feel a strong wind because we were moving with the air.
I did not find it frightening, and the pilot and crew gave me a professional impression. My landing was soft. Those are my own impressions of that flight; landing conditions and people’s reactions vary, so follow the pilot’s briefing throughout.
If you are nervous about heights or flying, my experience may be reassuring. I would not promise that nobody will feel afraid or motion-sick. Ask the operator about your concerns and check the participation requirements before booking.
The landscape that makes Luxor different
For me, this is much more than a balloon ride. The Nile, the fields, the desert mountains and the monuments of ancient Egypt appear together in one landscape. As the light becomes warmer, the shapes of the mountains and the ancient sites become clearer. That is what makes flying here so memorable.

After landing
After the flight, the transfer takes you back to your hotel under the hotel pickup-and-drop-off arrangement offered by the linked experience. Confirm the return point if you are staying on a Nile cruise ship or would prefer to continue sightseeing.

Hot Air Balloon Riding in Luxor
Why I recommend the experience: the combination of a calm sensation of flight and an extraordinary view over the landscape of ancient Egypt. For me, it is an experience worth making time for in Luxor.
Best for: travellers who want a different perspective on Luxor and are happy with an early start.
Check carefully: first flight versus after sunrise, your confirmed pickup time, the total duration and the weather cancellation arrangements. I consider ballooning in Egypt excellent value, but compare the price for the exact departure you want.
From the operator’s listing: approximately three hours for the overall experience, with hotel pickup and drop-off. This is not three hours in the air. The listing names Luxor Sky Balloon and notes that participation restrictions apply; it is not wheelchair accessible and is not recommended for pregnant travellers.

My take
The early alarm is worth it. If you want the moment of sunrise over the Nile, choose the first flight and confirm it explicitly. If you choose the flight after sunrise, I would still expect a remarkable view. Of all the ways to see Luxor, this is one I would strongly encourage you to consider.
