Nile Cruise

The river, the ancient sites and time to look more closely. Dmitry’s route advice, personal verdict and practical checks before booking.

Quick answer

Choose the cruise direction that fits the rest of your journey, then compare the actual sightseeing programme. If you have enough time, I recommend considering the round trip: revisiting places can give you time to look more calmly. Leave extra time for Aswan beyond the cruise.

MY EGYPT NOTES · BY DMITRY SALEY

A different view of Egypt, from the Nile.

I have spent more than a year living in Egypt and travelled around the country by car and other forms of transport. A Nile cruise is one of the experiences I recommend making time for. It brings the ancient sites together with another side of the country: the river, its islands and life along the banks.

Here is how I would choose the route, what I would look out for along the way and why I would give Aswan more time.

See the cruise option on Viator ↓

Aswan to Luxor or Luxor to Aswan?

The two main directions are Aswan to Luxor and Luxor to Aswan. I would choose the direction that works best with the rest of your journey, then look closely at the actual sightseeing programme. The name of the route alone does not tell you how much time you will have at each stop.

My recommendation: consider the round trip

If you have enough time, I recommend considering the full round trip. Yes, you will see some places twice. For me, that is a reason to consider it: a second visit gives you a chance to look more calmly and without rushing.

Route advice from Dmitry’s existing notes. Duration and inclusions depend on the departure you book.

Time on the river

When choosing a cruise, I would look at both parts of the experience: the visits ashore and the time on board. Check the actual ship and cabin as well as the itinerary. My photographs below show my own trip; they are not a guarantee of the vessel offered for a particular departure.

The stops I would look for

Esna Lock

The lock at Esna belongs on the route as well as the temples. I would check how the passage through the lock fits into the cruise programme, rather than thinking only about the stops ashore.

The Temple of Horus in Edfu

The Temple of Horus is in Edfu, on the west bank of the Nile, roughly between Luxor and Aswan. This is one of the visits I would look for when comparing cruise programmes.

Kom Ombo

Kom Ombo is another stop I would include when thinking about a Nile cruise. Check the programme of your chosen departure to see how the visit is arranged. The photograph below is from my visit in the evening.

Aswan: islands, inscriptions and tombs

I would not treat Aswan simply as the place to board or leave the ship. Its islands, the rock inscriptions on Sehel Island and the tombs around Aswan deserve a place in your plans. Check which visits are part of your cruise and which you would need to arrange separately.

Why I would stay longer in Aswan

If you have time, explore beyond the cruise programme. I recommend walking through the market and along the waterfront, talking with local people and leaving room to feel the atmosphere of Upper Egypt. These are the things that can give a trip more depth than a list of sightseeing stops.

I would also make time for the Nubia Museum and the open-air museum on Elephantine Island. You could add a visit to a beach by the Nile, a camel ride or a kayaking outing. I see these as ways to explore Aswan more fully; they are not a list of activities included in every cruise.

Abu Simbel: my preference

I also recommend making time for Abu Simbel. You can take the excursion offered through the cruise or look for a later option. Personally, I prefer the later option.

If you choose the cruise linked below, read its Abu Simbel arrangements carefully: the operator describes an early departure. My preference for a later visit is separate from that package. I would confirm any change with the operator before booking.

A Nile cruise option to consider

ASWAN → LUXOR · 4 DAYS / 3 NIGHTS

Nile cruise with Abu Simbel & a hot-air balloon ride

This is the cruise option I suggest checking if you want an organised Aswan-to-Luxor itinerary. It combines river travel with guided sightseeing in Upper Egypt.

Best for: a shorter trip where you want several major visits organised together.

Skip if: you want the full round trip I recommend considering, a later Abu Simbel departure without arranging a change, or a particularly slow pace.

From the operator’s listing: four days, three nights on board with meals and English-speaking guiding. Abu Simbel and a balloon ride are advertised; the flight depends on conditions.

What I would check: the actual ship and cabin, admission tickets, drinks, tips, transfers and the daily programme. The listing excludes attraction admission, tips and cruise drinks. I would confirm the total cost and balloon cancellation terms before paying.

My take

I recommend a Nile cruise for the combination of the river and the places along it. If your time allows, consider the round trip and give Aswan a few unhurried days beyond the cruise programme. For a shorter organised journey, use the option above as a starting point and check that the pace and inclusions suit you.
